This July Feels Different. Here's Why I'm Still Paying Attention

July 4, 2026 marks 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia. As someone who calls Philadelphia home, I have always felt a particular connection to that history. A small group of rebels with no guarantee of success and everything to lose decided to build something entirely new, and put their names on it. Two hundred and fifty years later, that spirit is very much alive, and it is a genuinely fascinating time to be part of American history. Happy Independence Day!
Now, about XFS this July.
My first two Julys at XFS, the phone barely rang. I knew the summer slowdown was real in tax and accounting. I got my headstart on building and designing processes and controls and marketing. Clients disappear for vacation, decisions get deferred, and the pace drops across the board. I prepared for it both years. It still surprised me how quiet it was.
This July is a different story entirely.
I took a much needed vacation road trip last month. That was risky, but new clients are seeking us out this summer! Despite the break, we haven't slowed down. Rose is pumped. There is a momentum to the practice right now that I have not felt in quite the same way before. Part of it is spring and summer outreach paying off. Part of it is something harder to name, a sense that XFS has genuinely found its footing. When Rose and I compare notes, the word that keeps coming up is enthusiasm. There is something special building here, and clients seem to feel it too.
What changed between Year 1 and Year 3 is not one thing but a set of habits operating together.
The most significant shift has been structure. This year, we are intentionally building the day around my 'golden hours', and after about a year on the program that is really manifesting itself this summer. My golden hours are the blocks where client work actually gets done. Protecting those while maintaining dedicated marketing time, prospect meetings, and networking has given my calendar a rhythm it hasn't had before. We are hitting our marks with a regularity that did not exist in the first two years, and consistency is showing up in results.
The other major contributor has been our CRM. This is important and key to July. The website launched in May, and tax season never really ended this year until my re-set. Now, we are working out of it more deliberately, and that single change has improved follow-up discipline, pipeline visibility, and the general sense that nothing important is falling through the cracks. When the system is actually being used, it works a lot better.
So why, with all of this going well, am I writing a July series called "Where Things Start to Slip"?
All of this momentum did not arrive on its own, it came from adjusting specific habits, consistently working towards shifting and evolving plans. The risk right now would be to assume that the good results we're experiencing will continue without the behaviors that produced them.
This is something I think about directly. Coach Mac used to preach "If it's to be, it's up to me!" If XFS slips this summer, I'll own it. It won't be because of the market or the season. An unplanned day off here, a missed appointment there, a follow-up list that quietly grows longer than it should. None of those things are catastrophic individually. Together, over six or eight weeks, they can quietly reverse what took months to build.
Good momentum does not run itself. The calendar discipline that is working in July needs the same attention in August. The CRM that is keeping follow-ups current has to actually be opened every morning. The structure that is protecting productive time only holds if it is actively chosen.
For any business owner reading this: if July is going well, examine what is making it work and protect those things deliberately. If it is slower than expected, that is information worth using. Either way, the question is the same: what has to keep happening for the second half of this year to be as strong as the first?
That is the question July is asking. It deserves a real answer.
Happy 250th to Philadelphia and to everyone who has carried that original spirit forward. Training camp is around the corner! Go Birds!
