A CPA shares lessons learned while cleaning up his own books after tax season.

Post-Tax Season Reality: Getting My Own Books Back in Order

Tax season is over. Here at XFS, February, March, and April 2026 felt like a runaway train, not unlike the surge the Philadelphia Flyers put together after the Olympic Break. Like most CPAs, I spent the last few months focused almost entirely on my clients. Returns, extensions, planning conversations, problem-solving, deadlines. You stay in it long enough, and your entire world narrows to getting people across the finish line.

Now that things have slowed down a bit, I’m doing something that probably won’t surprise a lot of business owners.

I’m cleaning up my own books.

They’re not a disaster. But they’re not where I want them to be either. Transactions need to be reviewed. A few things need to be reclassified. Invoices need to go out. There are gaps in how I’ve been tracking certain activity. Nothing catastrophic, but enough that I don’t have the level of visibility I expect from myself.

And that’s the point.

Even as a CPA, it’s easy to let your own house slip a bit when you’re busy taking care of everyone else’s. That doesn’t make it acceptable, but it is a reality.

So May, for me, is about getting back to control. Not perfection, but control.

There’s a big difference.

Control means I understand what’s happening in my business without guessing. It means I trust the numbers I’m looking at. It means I can make decisions without second-guessing whether the data is right.

Right now, I don’t have that at the level I want. So I’m fixing it.

The first step is simple, but it’s not always easy. I’m sitting down and looking at everything. No shortcuts. No assumptions. Just working through it piece by piece until it makes sense again.

That’s what I see most business owners struggle with. Not the complexity, but the avoidance. When things feel even slightly off, it’s easier to push it to next week.

Then next month.

Then suddenly you’re operating a business without really knowing what’s going on under the hood.

I’ve been there. I’m kinda there right now! That’s why I think this month’s theme matters.

Getting control of your numbers is not an exercise in creating the perfect set of books. It is a process where you need to be honest about where you are and doing the work to get back to a place where the numbers actually help you.

For me, that means getting my books current, tightening up my processes, and making sure I’m not just reacting to what already happened, but actually using my financial results to guide all of the exciting things that are about to happen!

That’s North Star value! It creates clarity, control, and forward momentum.

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to share what I’m seeing as I go through this process. What stands out. What feels off. What actually matters and what doesn’t. If I’m dealing with it, I know my clients are too.

If we’re all being honest, this is where better businesses start. Not the most pristine set of books ever imagined, but with accurate records that can be easily understood and relied upon.
